Chivas Regal Ultis
A self initiated brief mixing product shots and visual effects.
All about the detail.... detail, detail detail. The intricate label with its embossing and finishing, the unique lid with its art deco glory, the underside of the bottle with its embossed design scattering interesting patterns of light inside the base, the debossed shield in the glass and the tapered shape of the bottle. These all make for a wonderfully intriguing piece of packaging – and a satisfyingly challenging CGI project to undertake.
Rather than leave the packaging static, it was taken into the next dimension by animating some of the elements and adding a sprinkling of visual effects. This is where the fun comes in and really elevates the a straightforward pack shot into something quite different – and really revels in what the medium of computer generated imagery can bring.
The fire simulation was creating using Houdini software, which is fantastic for all kinds of visual effects. The fire reacts with the bottle and envelopes it, creating some beautiful reflections and refractions.
The label involved multiple 'maps' taken into substance painter where the texturing can be applied and manipulated in real time. It's all layered up to match the embossing and finishing as closely as possible.
The lid is completely modelled as its own individual entity, complete with cork stopper. Everything has been measured out and counted meticulously to replicate the original item exactly.
The base of the bottle is taken into Substance Painter for its execution which involves a series of techniques to successfully achieve the beautiful embossed design.
This is a fantastic example of taking a product and its packaging, bringing it into the digital realm, and opening up all kinds of amazing and intriguing possibilities.
With the digital asset faithfully recreated using precise subdivsion modelling, physically based materials and textures and real world lighting it is now ready and willing to really begin its journey on all manner of exciting, mind bending, beautiful (and, above all, impactful) 3D loveliness.
